11 Year Old Mikaila Ulmer is Saving Bees with Her Lemonade

I’m not sure there’s anything more heart-warming or inspiring than an 11 year old girl trying to save our environment. Mikaila Ulmer is doing just that. She’s turning an unfortunate run-in with a bee into a successful business. This young entrepreneur is a public speaker and philanthropist from Austin, Texas.

After learning about the near extinction of bees, Mikaila decided to change her great-grandmother’s 1940’s recipe, sweetening with honey instead of sugar. Sending portions of the earnings to organizations for the conservation of bees. Using her recipe, Mikaila started selling her lemonade on weekends and on school breaks. Naming her business ‘Bee Sweet Lemonade’ she earned $60,000 on the show ‘Shark Tank‘ and recently landed an $11 million deal with Whole Foods. Quite an accomplishment for anyone!

“Last year, beekeepers lost 40 percent of all their hives. Bees are dying. If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe then man would only have four years of life left.”

Being made with mint, flax-seed and honey, Bee Sweet Lemonade will be sold in 55 Whole Foods stores across the southeast. If it sells well, Whole Foods is willing to sell it in stores nationwide.

Mikaila now speaks publicly about the dangers bees face and leads workshops on how to save them. She was also invited to be a part of the White House Kids’ State Dinner, having the opportunity to meet President Barack Obama. Her public speaking is taking her to Cape Town, South Africa this summer where she will speak to young girls about entrepreneurship.

Looking forward to creating new lemonade flavors she hopes to expand her business saying, “I want to help save the bees.”
