The music industry is notably a tough industry for anyone to find their way into but from it has come some remarkable figures whom each and every one of us has in some shape or form admired or been inspired by. At just ten years old I picked up a guitar for the first time in school and since then have fallen in love with instruments. Currently, I am learning to play bass guitar and feel that is the instrument for me; it feels natural in my hands. During the time that I’ve been learning to play instruments there’s days where I’ve just felt like giving up because ‘I can’t get this part right’ or ‘the timings are too complex’. We all have those days when giving up seem like the answer to our problems but I stop and think about the people whom I admire and what if they’d given up? Where would they be now? I personally have been influenced by many incredible women in the music industry both past and present. And many of those woman have been my inspiration as a young musician and made me strive to keep going because I CAN do it. I love how women are increasingly appearing more in bands and showing young girls like me that it’s cool to play the drums or pick up a guitar and rock out.
With all of the above in mind I want to share someone of the incredible women in the music industry who have inspired me when learning the tricks of the trade as a young musician. Hopefully, they will inspire the musician in you whether that be by singing, picking up a guitar or even learning the drums-the options are endless really!
Perhaps one of the greatest rock vocalists ever; Stevie Nicks is the front woman of rock band Fleetwood Mac as well as leading a highly successful solo career and is known for her incredible vocals, song writing and stage presence. Her hauntingly beautiful voice portrays the story in each song perfectly and enchants the listener with her incredible tone and range. Stevie has written countless hit songs which often start as poem and stem into songs such as ‘Landslide,’ ‘Dreams,’ and ‘Sara.’ Her music has touched the hearts of many, creating the soundtrack to their lives and inspiring them to go out and achieve their dreams.
Amy Winehouse’s career began in 2003 with her debut album Frank and throughout the years she became a musical icon who’ll be admired for decades to come. During her short career she created a catalogue filled with musical treasures. The power and emotion in Amy’s soulful voice is a rare gem and one of the reasons that she caught my attention all those years ago and fell in love her music.
Moving on to guitar, Orianthi Panagaris has been playing guitar from a very young age and left school at fifteen years old to pursue a career in the music industry and record her very first album. Since then, she has taken to the stage with some of the industry’s biggest names including Michael Jackson, Steve Vai and Mariah Carey to name just a few as well as being the first female guitar player to join the Alice Cooper band in 2011. I personally, discovered Orianthi around the time when I was first experimenting with the world of musical instruments. Her influence as a guitarist inspired me greatly, I dreamt of being a guitarist just like her and that’s what gave me that initial push to practice and learn.
Probably the most famous female drummer ever if you ask me and she doesn’t hold that title for no reason after all. In her earlier twenties she had already shared the stage with some of the biggest names in show business including Lionel Richie, Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross but is probably best known for her work with Prince throughout the years. Not only is she a talented drummer, Sheila has also recorded seven studio albums throughout her career sharing her gift of singing with the world. She is a fine example of world-class musician and a role model for aspiring drummers.
I discovered Nik West through Orianthi who I mentioned earlier whilst scrolling through YouTube and discovering footage of them performing together at various events. Immediately, I was in awe of her bass playing. As a young female bassist myself, I have been inspired by Nik’s musicianship, vibrancy and quirkiness that shines through her playing. I also admire how she wants to inspire other young female musicians by founding the ‘Queen of Strings’ competition back in 2014 highlighting female musicians and giving them chance to shine. Throughout her career she has worked with names such a Prince, Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics and John Mayer and has been praised by Steven Tyler for her talent and energy. She is a role model for all young bass players and I can only hope to see more female bassists like her brace the music industry in future.
So there you have it; a list of extremely talented female musicians to inspire each and every one of us. There are hundreds of wonderful musicians out there and I wish I could have included more but you’d be here all day if I had. Hopefully, this list will encourage you to check out these incredible woman’s work and will inspire you to enter the musical world!
