Janet Jackson, the inimitable force of nature who has been a pop culture fixture for over 30 years. Her name is practically synonymous with R&B and her image is recognized around the globe. From her early years on The Jacksons through her ever evolving career, Jackson has not stopped bringing in huge crowds wherever she goes.
Jackson’s career has blasted racial and gender barriers in the music world, paving the way for black artists and female artists in an industry that once saw them as substandard. The list of artists who name Janet Jackson as their inspiration is a veritable who’s who of pop in the last few decades. From Jennifer Lopez to Rhianna, Usher to Beyonce, Jackson has had a heavy hand in shaping the musical landscape of today.
Despite all this, despite her status as musical nobility, and despite the words of Joshua Klein who wrote, “stardom was not too hard to predict, but few could have foreseen that Janet, Miss Jackson if you’re nasty, would one day replace Michael as the true heir to the Jackson family legacy.” Janet Jackson has yet to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Every other musical member of the Jackson family, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael have found their way to the Rock Hall. Michael is a two-time inductee, once as a member of the Jackson 5 and once as a solo artist. It is past time for Janet to join her brothers and be recognized for her unmatched contribution to the music world.
Her discography and tour list read like a hit list of the last few decades. Her accolades are unsurpassed. Jackson is one of only three acts to ever achieve number one album status on the Billboard 200 for four consecutive decades. She has topped the list seven times, most recently with her 2015 release Unbreakable. The Recording Industry Association of America recognizes Jackson as one of the bestselling artists in the country and her list of certified albums (that is, silver, gold, and platinum albums) is hard to believe.
With all this to her name, and as part of the musical royal family that are the Jacksons, it is difficult to comprehend why Janet Jackson has yet to take her place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This snub cannot be allowed to continue without mention. Janet Jackson deserves a place in the hall of fame for a life’s work that has truly shaped the music world for generations to come.
