THE “NEVERTHELESS” PORTRAIT PROJECT: INSPIRING WOMEN, WEEK 14

Once a week Inspirer will feature a selection of drawings by our staff photographer, Annie Govekar. The drawings are part of the “Nevertheless” portrait project which feature inspiring women and their quotes.

Elizabeth Warren

Quote taken from commencement speech on linkedin.com, 2013

“Nevertheless, she persisted.” Every era has its battle cry, and for the strange new reality we in the United States find ourselves bearing witness to, this may be it. Mere weeks after millions turned out in cities across the world for the Women’s March, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren was silenced in a formal vote by senate Republicans during the hearing for Attorney General Nominee Jeff Sessions.

Mariska Hargitay

Quote taken from Ladies Home Journal interview, 2013.

Hargitay’s “No More” campaign, popular during the NFL domestic violence scandal and maintaining today, resonated across demographics.  Using the faces of many celebrity supporters, e.g. Maria Bello, Debra Messing, Ice-T, Mark Herzlich, Amy Poehler and others, these public service announcements came into our households conveying the powerful message of No More Excuses—for violence, for victim blaming, for bystanding.  Mariska produced these, and other popular PSAs, in order to start getting right to the heart of the matter:  we needed to change the way society looks at these crimes.  These efforts to end this violence have been known widely as a “joyful revolution.”

Sheryl Sandberg

Quote taken from Sandberg’s book “Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead”, 2013.

Sandberg spoke at the Watermark Conference for Women alongside former Secretaries of State Condoleezza Rice and Madeline Albright to further the potentiality. A long time major Democratic donor, Sandberg was a leading contender in a Hillary Clinton administration to serve as Treasury secretary. When Recode executive editor Kara Swisher questioned her about it directly, Sandberg refused to give anything away saying, “I have said no, and I’m going to continue to say no.” Her book tour in the coming months for her upcoming book, “Option B,” may give a clearer indication as to her plans for the future.

More about the Nevertheless Project:

The “Nevertheless” project is an art project that features a quote and portrait of an inspiring woman every day. The goal of the project is to run for 365 days while inspiring, motivating and educating. The idea for this project came along while I was commiserating over the current state of the world with my friend. I asked “What can I even do?” My friend simply responded with “Your art.”  This resonated with me and the project was started shortly after.  My hope is to lift people up by shinning the light on badass women. Some you may know, some you may not. We would love to hear who inspires you and who you think should be featured.
