The “Nevertheless” Portrait Project: Inspiring Women, Week 16

Once a week Inspirer will feature a selection of drawings by our staff photographer, Annie Govekar. The drawings are part of the “Nevertheless” portrait project which feature inspiring women and their quotes.

Diane Latiker

Quote taken from the interview with Inspirer interview, 2017.

In 2016, Diane Latiker was named by L’Oréal Paris as one of ten Women of Worth honorees. The Chicago Tribune called Latiker a “remarkable woman” in a feature on the Chicago activist and lauded community organizer. The mother of eight is the founder of the nonprofit, Kids off the Block, which essentially helps children in her community get off the streets. By opening up her own home to children, Latiker offers youngsters who might have been tempted by gangs and drugs, a safe haven filled with educational and recreational resources.

Amal Clooney

Quote taken from Clooney’s Texas Conference for Women keynote speech, 2016.

In 2010, after a couple of years working in the United States as a clerk, Clooney headed back to Britain to work on several high profile cases for the prestigious Doughty Street Chambers in London. During this time, she represented Julian Assange, WikiLeaks founder, during Sweden extradition proceedings. Additionally, she specialized in criminal law, international law, extradition cases, and human rights cases.

Clooney is also co-editor of The Law and Practice of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, and author of numerous international criminal law publications by Oxford University Press, per ABC. The legal text was published under her maiden name, Amal Alamuddin.

Joan Baez

Quote taken from Rolling Stone interview, 2017.

Back in October, a list of artist were announced as possible contenders for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame including Jane’s Addiction, Janet Jackson, The Cars, The Zombies, and Chaka Khan — but the artists that came out on top of the nominations were Pearl Jam, Tupac, Electric Light Orchestra, Yes, Journey, Nile Rodgers, and Joan Baez. Baez is the only woman to be inducted in 2017.

More about the Nevertheless Project:

The “Nevertheless” project is an art project that features a quote and portrait of an inspiring woman every day. The goal of the project is to run for 365 days while inspiring, motivating and educating. The idea for this project came along while I was commiserating over the current state of the world with my friend. I asked, “What can I even do?” My friend simply responded with “Your art.”  This resonated with me and the project was started shortly after.  My hope is to lift people up by shining the light on badass women. Some you may know, some you may not. We would love to hear who inspires you and who you think should be featured.
