7 Years Ago: Mariah Carey Makes History with ‘We Belong Together’

Mariah Carey became only the fifth act ever to hold the top two positions in the US singles chart on September 2, 2005. Carey’s single “We Belong Together,” from her 10th album The Emancipation of Mimi, notched a 10th consecutive week at No.1 on the Billboard chart. The song was released on March 29, 2005 as the second single off the album. The single samples lyrics from Bobby Womack’s “If You Think You’re Lonely Now” and the Deele’s “Two Occasions.” “We Belong Together” was Carey’s 16th number one, giving her the third highest number of chart-toppers in the US behind the Beatles and Elvis Presley.
