Hayley Orrantia has had quite the summer. The singer/songwriter, actress, and Dallas native underwent a harrowing vocal surgery, released her single “Give Me Back Sunday” on Radio Disney, and began filming the upcoming season of her hit sitcom, The Goldbergs.
Inspirer was able to catch up with Orrantia to get some exclusive details about Season 5 of The Goldbergs, premiering this Wednesday, September 27th at 8/7c on ABC.
When asked if her Goldberg’s character, Erica, would be pursuing her music further this season, Orrantia divulges “I think so. In the first few episodes, it’s been more about the journey of Erica moving to college and how her mother is handling it. So that’s been most of the storyline.” She continues, “I’m sure it’s going to come up again because Erica’s going to DC School of the Arts. We made a switch because Erica was meant to go to Emory. So I’m assuming that she’ll be working on a lot of music there. So far, I haven’t seen any music in the script, but we shall see!” According to Orrantia, the fact that Erica is even pursuing music in the show is a happy accident. “Erica was not originally supposed to be a singer or a musician. It was something where I put in a word with the producers,” she shares. Orrantia had been hoping that she might be able to record a song for an episode, but instead, her singing became a central storyline. “I didn’t think it would be part of the character,” she admits.
It’s even more incredible when you consider the fact that her series regular role on The Goldbergs is Orrantia’s first real acting role. “The only thing I did before The Goldbergs was an indie movie and then a Sprint commercial that was in movie theaters. So, ultimately The Goldbergs is my first gig. It’s a part of my story,” she confesses.
When asked if she’s anything like her character, Erica, Orrantia laughs, “There are a lot of times where my parents say that I am Erica. At the end of the day, the character is a lot like me.”
