Hear the Talking Heads Sampled on Selena Gomez’s ‘Bad Liar’

Selena Gomez co-wrote “Bad Lair” with long-time collaborators Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter, sampling Tina Weymouth’s bassline from the Talking Heads’ single “Psycho Killer,” off the rock bands ’77 debut album. Both Michaels and Gomez are fans of the band, which formed in 1975 in New York City and remained active until the early ’90s. Michaels suggested to Gomez and Tranter that they should write the song over Weymouth’s bassline, which infused modern pop with a classic rock hit. Talking Heads members David Byrne, Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz all gave permission for the sample to be used.
