The women of L7 have returned to the studio, coming out with their response to the Trump madness. In true L7 fashion –with screaming guitars, cheeky lyrics, and raw grunge power — “Dispatch From Mar-a-Lago” is everything we’ve missed from the Riot Grrl pioneers. If any band is going to stick their neck out to actually voice their frustration with the current situation, it’s going to be L7.
The band’s classic lineup — Donita Sparks, Suzi Gardner, Jennifer Finch, and Dee Plakas — has said that this is one of two tracks they have finished. Leaving fans with their fingers crossed in the hope that this could lead to a new album, “Dispatch From Mar-a-Lago” is the rock and roll response we’ve been waiting for.
“S.O.S. from the golden throne/‘Mogul’s’ in deep shit, he’s all alone/It’s not good, a riot in fact/The whole friggin’ country club is under attack.”
The band has been busy promoting their documentary L7: Pretend We’re Dead, which is set for release October 13. The archival documentary by Sarah Price tells L7’s story; from the ’80s “art punk” Silver Lake days to the band’s post-millennium breakup. L7 has been back on the road since 2015 and, as the release of “Dispatch From Mar-a-Lago” shows, there’s no loss of momentum for these heavy hitting women.
