If you haven’t watched Stranger Things by now a) I feel sorry for you, and b) you’ve missed out on the cultural phenomena that put Netflix on the map in another galaxy and made Eggos cool again. From the opening credits that scream early ’80s horror movie to the amazing actors that make it all so real, Stranger Things is everything current pop culture is missing.
The plot centers around the disappearance of Will Byers, played by Noah Schnapp. The mysterious appearance of Eleven, played by Millie Bobby Brown, triggers a series of events that will change the small town of Hawkins, Indiana forever. Convinced that Will is still alive, his friends Mike Wheeler (played by Finn Wolfhard), Dustin Henderson (played by Gaten Matarazzo), and Lucas Sinclair (played by Caleb McLaughlin) go on the crusade of a lifetime to find him.
But in Hawkins, Indiana, nothing is at it seems.
The much-anticipated second season of “Stranger Things” is scheduled to premiere October 27th. An incredibly talented cast brings this story to life, including Winona Ryder, who delivers a stellar performance as Will’s mom, Joyce Byers. But it’s Eleven, the shaved head newcomer, who steals the show. Ahead of its upcoming release, here are 11 reasons why Eleven is a total badass.
1. She didn’t let her past define her.
It’s painfully clear that Eleven came from a “bad place.” She was at the mercy of her evil scientist dad who forced her to participate in experiments that threatened her health and sanity. He wasn’t raising a daughter; he was raising a cold-blooded killer. (Talk about daddy issues.) But despite that all, Eleven still turned out to be a loyal friend who genuinely cared about the well-being of others.
2. She could rock a shaved head better than Sinead O’Connor.
Not everyone can rock a shaved head like Sinead O’ Connor, or Demi Moore for that matter. The fact that “Stranger Things” is set in the 80’s guarantees that Eleven would pretty much be the only one with a shaved head. What she lacked in looks she made up with confidence. As for me, my head is way too lumpy to come even close to shaving my head. But seeing how great Eleven looks almost made me reconsider. Almost.
3. She’s a fast learner.
When the only memories you can recall involve a secret testing facility, there’s a lot to catch up on if you suddenly find yourself in the middle of a small town. But Eleven handled it all in stride. She learned quickly that friends don’t lie, she could actually use her powers for good, and Eggos make up their own food group.
4. She could wear a pink dress and blonde wig and still be terrifying.
Remember that scene when Mike confronted Troy and the other bullies who had been tormenting him? All it took was one intense stare from Eleven (and a bloody nose to follow), to make Troy piss his pants and basically become the laughing stock of the school. She may have looked innocent in her hand me down dress, but looks are definitely deceiving.
5. She didn’t lose her cool.
Imagine if you escaped from some a secret, nefarious facility only to end up in a small town that you had to save from unprecedented evil. You’d probably be a little on edge too. Even at the receiving end of Lucas’s and Mike’s outbursts, Eleven still remained calm (most of the time, anyway). And she did her best to do everything to keep her new- found friends safe and out of harm’s way.
6. She’s basically superhuman.
Eleven has a very particular set of skills. She could pretty much drop kick anyone with her mind, make objects levitate, and make bullies pee themselves. And she can access alternate realities. Using her powers sometimes came at a toll, weakening her to the brink of exhaustion. But when it came to helping her friends, it was all worth it.
7. She made Eggos cool again.
Once introduced to the sweet taste of Eggos, there was little else Eleven loved more. She even used her aforementioned powers to acquire said Eggos. It’s one thing to toast them, drizzle some syrup over them, and maybe add a dab of butter or two. But Eleven ate Eggos straight from the box, no chaser. And in vast amounts too.
8. She’s a girl of few words.
One of the most intriguing things about Eleven was that she didn’t need to say a lot to get the point across. And when she did have something to say, best believe that you better listen. Her short answers to loaded questions were pretty spot on. Like when a teacher at the nearby school asked her where she was from. Eleven simply replied, “Bad place.” I couldn’t think of a better way to describe the place she once called home.
9. She’s the ultimate best friend.
It was a rocky road to friendship with Mike, Lucas, and Dustin. Especially Lucas. But in the end, Eleven sacrificed herself to save her friends and return Will from the horrors of the Upside Down Place. I have some friends that won’t even share their Wifi password with me.
10. She couldn’t harm a…cat.
As a resident of the secret testing facility, Eleven was forced into all sorts of experiments. Nothing was off limits until she was ordered to kill a cat with her mind. Against the wishes of her father, Eleven refused to harm another living thing. At that moment you knew that despite the evil around her, Eleven was inherently good.
11. She sent the message that girls can be the hero too.
Simply put, there aren’t enough female heroes in mainstream media. Eleven proved that powerful things can come in tiny packages and girls are just as capable of saving the world as boys are. Eleven is the anti-damsel in distress that we all need. Bold on the inside, beautiful on the outside, and loyal to a fault- Eleven is a total badass.
