The Rose was Bette Midler’s film debut, and she also performed all the songs for the soundtrack. The title song, “The Rose” is still one of her biggest hits.
The film is about a rock star pushed to her limits, emotionally and physically. Rose, played by Midler, is an insecure alcoholic and former drug user determined to return to her hometown as a star. The character shares that and many other similarities to the great Janis Joplin.
