Today in 1986: Janet Jackson Lands her First US Number One Single with ‘When I Think of You’

1986 was a good year for Janet Jackson, her third album Control was burning up the Billboard 200, celebrating her first number one album and single. “When I Think of You” peaked today 31 years ago on the Billboard Hot 100. It worked its way there for three months and held the top spot for nearly two weeks. At that time, the just 20-year-old Jackson became the youngest artist to have a number one hit on that chart. The track was co-written by Jackson, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis, and explores the feeling of finding relief and fun in a lover. She has performed “When I Think of You” on every tour she’s gone out on, honoring the song that sparked it all.
