Today in 1986 The Bangles Started a Four Week Run at No 1 with ‘Walk Like an Egyptian’

The third single released off of The Bangles’ Different Light album, “Walk Like an Egyptian,” held the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks. As 1986 ended, and 1987 rolled in everyone was dancing along. With the help of singles like this one and “Manic Monday,” Different Light would go on to be the girl group’s most successful record.

“Walk Like an Egyptian” was one of the 165 songs that Clear Channel suggested were “lyrically questionable” after September 11. Other songs included on that list were ‘I Feel the Earth Move” by Carole King, “Free Fallin” by Tom Petty, and “Dancing in the Streets” by Martha and the Vandellas. “Walk Like an Egyptian” was also included on the “list of records to be avoided” during the Gulf War.
